The Science Program

A student examines the inside of a hard drive while learning about electromagnets. In Aseltine's science classes, students study various categories of science – physics, chemistry, biology, and earth sciences – depending on their grade level.  Curricula meet California Department of Education science standards required for public schools.  Our science instruction provides a foundation of knowledge and skills that prepares students for possible higher education – an option most considered impossible before Aseltine.

In their science classes, students don’t just read about science; they experience it for themselves.  Aseltine teachers connect science to students’ lives and focus on interactive labs and projects to provide students with a solid, comprehensive background in science and increase their interest in and understanding of the subject.  This hands-on approach to science addresses different learning styles, frees Aseltine students from the traditional forms of instruction with which they have struggled for so long, and is a highly effective way to turn what is usually a difficult subject into a relevant and accessible part of students’ lives so that they both understand and are engaged in the complex concepts and material.

Aseltine’s science instruction teaches students valuable analytical tools to move them from merely memorizing content to making meaningful connections between what they learn in the classroom and their lives.

In addition to the science curriculum, Aseltine requires all students to participate in monthly problem-solving sessions.
