Children don’t just learn at Aseltine.  They thrive.

Small class sizes – and a high staff-to-student ratio.  Rigorous academics.  Innovative arts education.  Cultural enrichment opportunities.  Fully-equipped computer lab.  Creative problem-solving.  Competitive sports.  Critical thinking.  Community service.  Individualized instruction. Staff who care. It’s no wonder Aseltine students are ready for a dynamic tomorrow.

Since 1968, Aseltine School has welcomed, nurtured and engaged San Diego’s K-12 students struggling with learning disabilities and emotional issues whose needs are not being met in traditional academic settings.  We work with our students as partners in their learning process – students set their own academic and life goals, and we go above and beyond to help them reach them.

Students Tackle First Problem-Solving Session of the Year ...

On October 21, Aseltine students undertook their first problem-solving session of the 2010/’11 school year.  The “problem”, inspired by the Chilean miner’s ordeal, involved students “rescuing” 3 ping pong balls from a structure – which they also built – similar to the tunnel where the miners were trapped.  Using a limited supply of tools and materials – involving items such as paper, fishing line, tape, and slide-on spines for binding paper – the students had to rescue their ping pong balls in under 3 hours – and could only insert their rescue device into the tunnel one time.  The winning team rescued all 3 of their ping pong balls in under 10 minutes!  Although many students succeeded at this challenge, the Middle School students were especially successful.  We are proud of all our students, not only for solving this difficult problem but for handling their challenges and setbacks with patience, creativity, and composure.
