Frequently Asked Questions

Who are the students that attend Aseltine School?

Aseltine School enrolls students in grades 1 through 12 who have a federal handicapping code of emotionally disturbed (ED), severely learning disabled (SLD) or other health impaired (OHI).  The majority (85% - 100%) is male.  Students reside in all areas of San Diego County: as far north as Oceanside, Lakeside in the east and San Ysidro in the south.

Why do kids come to Aseltine School?

Most Aseltine students are referred by their public school district when it has been determined that the district is unable to provide a program that meets the student’s specialized educational needs.  Often, students have a history of difficult behaviors that require specialized attention beyond what the school district is able to provide.

What happens if kids don’t find success at Aseltine School?

The referring school district is obligated to locate an alternative educational placement for the child.  Typically this may be another Non-Public School like Aseltine, a day treatment program or possibly a residential treatment center.

How long does a student remain at Aseltine School?

The average length of stay for an Aseltine student is 2 years.  Whenever it is appropriate, the student is transitioned back to a public school setting through a dual enrollment process.

How long has Aseltine School been around?

Aseltine School first opened its doors in 1968, and has been at the Hillcrest location since 1972.

Why do kids make it at Aseltine and not other places?

Aseltine School implements a philosophy that is refreshingly different.  All students are considered to be capable, competent and talented, and in control of themselves even when it may appear otherwise.  Students are encouraged to become active subjects in their educations.  The goal is not conformity or compliance, but rather radical self-discipline.  Students learn to develop the ability to control themselves when they least feel like doing so.  The staff and students are considered to be partners sharing the road to academic success.  As a result, there is a strong sense of community and respect at the school.

How many kids are there in each classroom?  How many staff members are in each classroom?

Usual class size at Aseltine School is 15 students, although some classes have fewer.  Typically there is one teacher per class and the number of aides depends on the needs of the students in the classroom.

How do you know when it is time for a student to leave Aseltine School?

A successful student is one who takes advantage of all the programs that Aseltine School has to offer.  When a student is able to demonstrate improved grades, exhibit regular attendance and progress is evident both academically and behaviorally, the student and Aseltine staff begin to consider what their next step will be.  All students must be able to implement self-discipline in the most difficult situations on a regular basis for at least six months or longer to be considered for transition.
